Role of Chief Minister
The party which gets majority in state elections forms the government in the state. The elected head of the party which wins election becomes the chief minister of the state. He advices governor over the various tasks that he performs in the state.
Power of Chief Minister
The complete governance of the state is carried out by the chief minister and his council of ministers. The development of the state including infrastructure, finance and other aspects is solely managed by the chief minister. He is alloted funds and other resources by the central government.
He is responsible for planning budget of the state and developing the state in terms of infrastructure and finance. He is even responsible for dismissing a cabinet minister if his performance is not found upto the mark.
Facilities of Chief Minister
The chief minister of the state is provided with facilities like residence facilities, travel facilities, medical facilities, relaxation in electricity and phone bills, etc. These facilities differ from state to state.
Medical Facilities: According to the Attendance rule, chief minister of any state is provided with free medical treatments, relaxation in medical bills and free admission in government hospitals and the referral hospitals which are declared by the government.
Residence facilities: The chief minister is provided residence which is fully furnished and the rent of the house may be around Rs 20000. the values of the house may vary from state to state. If the chief minister decides to stay in his own house, then the rent will be added to his salary.
Relaxation in electricity and phone bills: The chief minister is allotted a certain amount of money as phone bill. The amount may vary from Rs 8000- 12,000 depending on the state. He is allotted a certain free units of electric charge per month.
Travelling facilities: The chief minister is allotted a fixed amount of money for his travelling expenses. It may vary from state to state. The family members also get a amount of free travelling facilities.
Selection and term of Chief Minister
The Chief Minister is appointed by the Governor who suggests a vote of confidence in the state Legislature to confirm the appointment of the chief minister.
The term of the Chief Minister
Normally the term of the chief minister along with his council of ministers is five years. If the party loses the vote of confidence in the state Legislature, then the Governor may terminate the government.
Pension of Chief Minister
Every chief minister gets a certain amount as pension after retirement. The amount varies from state to state.
