Chatra is among the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state of Jharkhand. It comprises of five Assembly segments, which together cover the districts of Chatra and Latehar, while spreading across parts of the Palamu district. The Lok Sabha Constituency of Chatra (constituency no. 4) consists of 1,037,665 number of electorates, of these 491,543 are females and 546,122 are males as the Election commission of India 2009 reports suggests. While 4 of these 5 assembly segments are reserved for the candidates of marginalized strata of the society, Chatra remains unreserved. Till the year 1977, Chatra spread across the vast areas of Hazaribag, Gaya and Palamu. It was only after the reforming of the states that the Chatra and Latehar districts were included into the Chatra constituency. Like other districts in the State of Jharkhand, Chatra, Latehar and Palamu are economically dependent, thus coming under the aid of special privileges given by the government, such as the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme. Chatra constituency is part of the Red Corridor, due to the frequent insurgencies of the Red Rebels.
